A vintage knitting pattern for three different styles of vests for babies, to knit in either of two sizes, Birth - 6 months, or 6 - 12 months, and using a very fine yarn, 2 ply or 3 ply.
2 ply Vest To fit: 18", 20" chest. - tension is 9 sts and 12 rows to 1", using no. 11 (3.0mm) needles or 17 sts to 2" and 11 rows to 1", using no. 10 (3.25mm) needles.
Wrap-over 3 ply Vest To fit: 1st size 16" all round underarms, stretching up to 20" with 2nd size being 17" and stretching up to 22". Tension to achieve is 8 sts and 10 rows to 1" over st. st. using no. 10 (3.25mm) needles for the 1st size or 15 sts to 2" and 9 rows to 1", using no. 9 (3.75mm) needles.
Ribbed 3 ply Vest to fit: 1st size 20", 2nd size 22". Tension 13 sts and 10 rows to 1", using no. 10 (3.25mm) needles or 12 sts and 9 rows to 1" using no. 9 (3.75mm) needles.
To produce the different size vest, you follow the same instructions but change the needle size.
The original pattern is from circa 1940s and its in good condition for the age.
